Youngsters from four schools took part in the finals of the North West Leicestershire section of an interactive Road Safety Quiz last week.

The quiz is run annually by the County Councils Road Safety and Travel Awareness Team and this years final was held at Packington Village Hall, a neutral venue for the four teams who got the highest scores in the area.

Qualifying rounds ran around the county from November, involving 8,000 children from local schools; but only four teams could come through to participate in each area final.

Teams from the four Primary Schools, All Saints C of E, Hugglescote, Thringstone and Willesley competed against each other in six rounds to compete for the North West Leicestershire title.

Each contestant was given an interactive control with which to answer the questions, which were projected onto a large screen at the front of the room.

Rounds were borrowed from television game shows such as A Question of Sport and University Challenge, providing a hard-fought and rather tense contest.

Thringstone Primary eventually came out on top by a margin of just two points, and took home a trophy and reflective scarf each.

Nigel Horsley, Team Manager of Road Safety and Travel Awareness said: Every child today showed a good standard of road safety knowledge and should be very proud to have made it to the finals.

Teaching basic rules such as the Green Cross Code is hugely important in keeping our children safe and helping to reduce the number of lives lost on Leicestershires roads.
