Loughborough Nanpantan West is one of the best places in the country you can live as it is in the top 2% of the best areas of the country. If you divide the country up into small areas with between 1000 and 3000 people you get over 32,000 areas. Nanpantan is ranked highly with only 378 places deemed better to live. Meanwhile the area Loughborough Bell Foundry, an area of most deprivation in Charnwood rates over 2,100 places higher than the worst in the UK.
The latest published statistics from the government for the whole country (not Leicestershire County Council statistics as reported by a writter in a local publication) have rated small areas of the country depending on various factors and weighted them. However what is important to each person varies. For example if a young couple have young children they are going to weight education and employment higher than crime and living environment. Conversely a retired person will weight income and living environment higher. The factors that were used to come up with the overall positions in the government statistics are:
• Income (22.5%)
• Employment (22.5%)
• Health Deprivation and Disability (13.5%)
• Education, Skills and Training (13.5%)
• Barriers to Housing and Services (9.3%)
• Crime (9.3%)
• Living Environment (9.3%)
It is important to note that if you consider that Income and Employment is not 5 times more important than crime rate then you get a completely different order of the table. Based on education and living environment for example Loughborough Bell Foundry is better than 13,500 places in the country.
Referring to the Loughborough Echo article one local resident said: “According to the survey splashed across the front page of the Echo - I live in what is apparently the worst area of the whole county!! Based on income, crime, and health. Great - thatll knock £10K straight off the value of our house... thanks. Whilst it is blatantly obvious that it is the Peel Drive estate that has dragged us down into the gutter and that the flats within that estate should be demolished and most of its residents deported to the Isle Of Wight - it would seem that we are all being tarred with the same brush.”
However, hotspots of relative deprivation have been identified and this will allow both the Borough and the County to effectively target resources to these relatively small areas of the Borough, where incidentally the average life expectancy of both men and women is higher than the national average.
