Loughborough MP Backs Carbon Offsetting Programme
Posted on 20/02/2008

Loughborough MP Andy Reed is backing the Programme and Code of quality for carbon offsetting scheme announced yesterday.
The scheme announced by the Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs puts in place government approved and accredited code of practice to reduce carbon footprints on products consumers buy. Emissions offset through accredited products will be calculated consistently and correctly, and consumers will be provided with clear information and transparent prices that apply across products and the industry. The aim of the project is for schemes and companies that produce offsetting carbon footprints can have a framework and code under which to operate.
Carbon offsetting is the action of mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. A typical example is the purchase of carbon offsets to counteract for the greenhouse gas emissions caused by personal air travel.
Offsetting as part of a "carbon neutral" lifestyle has gathered some appeal and momentum chiefly among consumers in the west who have become aware of the potentially negative environmental effects of the energy-intensive lifestyles they live.
The Secretary of State announced the framework for the Code and the Government has appointed AEA to become the accreditation body for the Code. The scheme uses Kyoto compliant Certified Emissions Reductions (CERs) at the moment but hopes to expand to use industry wide voluntary carbon reduction schemes in the near future.
The Loughborough MP has given his backing to the scheme and encourages local people to look into ways of offsetting the carbon they use in their daily lives.
Andy told inLoughborough “we are living in a world where climate change is happening, we have to be at the forefront of initiatives to tackle it.
I fully support this programme and hope that through official accreditation this now offers, people can be satisfied about the offsetting they do and know that when they are using official companies, they are offsetting the carbon and making a difference.”
