Youth Councils operate successfully throughout the Country. A number of Youth Councils are in the East Midlands and the key of their success seems to be a membership that is truly representative of all young people. To this end Barrow Parish Council near Loughborough is seeking to work with existing youth groups and with those young people not associated with recognised organisations to create a ‘Youth Council’.

The Parish Council in Barrow Upon Soar is keen to set up a ‘Youth Council’ which will actively involve young people in decision making on various issues especially those affecting the younger generation. It is looking for young people aged between 13 and 18 years of age who would like to be a voice and who are prepared to seek solutions to some issues they face thus helping to influence and shape life within the village.

A spokesman for Barrow Parish Council said ‘ Young people can make a tremendous difference to the way a Parish Council relates to local matters, their input is needed not just for this generation but for those yet to come. We are therefore asking teachers, sports coaches, family, friends and neighbours to encourage young people’s involvement. It is, following an open meeting, hoped that an election will be held in June and a Youth Council will be up and running in September 2008’.

There will be an open evening for our young residents and interested parties on 12th March 2008 @ 7.00pm @ The Parish Council Meeting Room, refreshments will be served.

Should there be any queries prior to the meeting please contact the Parish Council Office on Loughborough (01509) 416016
