Loughborough University and Belvoir High School

Belvoir High School in Bottesford and Loughborough University are working together in a ground-breaking initiative to improve the quality of trainee science teachers.
Loughborough University requested to work with Belvoir High as one of its five partner schools following the successful placements of trainee teachers at the school over a number of years.
Belvoir High is one of only a handful of schools in the East Midlands to take part in the Government-funded initiative which intends to increase the number of students choosing to train as science teachers.
The school already has an excellent track record in the sciences. In 2007, the results from the national Key Stage 3 science tests (SATs) showed that Belvoir High pupils had made the best progress of any school in Leicestershire.
Through the new partnership, teaching of the sciences will be further boosted with more placements for trainee science teachers who will work alongside the schools’ experienced teaching staff.
Belvoir High is one of the partner schools in the pioneering reorganisation of education in Melton Mowbray and the Vale of Belvoir. This aims to raise standards of attainment and achievement by pupils, building on current school excellence.
As part of the reorganisation, Belvoir High will be changing its age range from 10-14 to 11-16 and will accommodate up to 600 pupils. In July, work starts on a £5.9 million refurbishment and extension to the school which will include five new state-of-the-art science laboratories. Next year, Belvoir High is optimistic that its application for specialist science status will be approved.
Jon Sherwin, headteacher at Belvoir High School, said: “We are already establishing a reputation for our strength in the teaching of the sciences. We are keen to build upon this through our application for specialist science status and by forming this innovative partnership with Loughborough University.”
