Loughborough Council Tax
Posted on 27/02/2008
P. Klein

inLoughborough reported last week that Leicestershire’s proportion of the Council Tax was increasing at 3.9%. Charnwood Borough Council have now announced that their share of the Council Tax that people in Loughborough and the rest of Charnwood will have to pay will rise by only 2.5% from April – one of the lowest increases in Leicestershire. Currently the Retail Price Index excluding interest (RPIX) is 3.4% and the Consumer Price Index is increasing at 2.2%
The Borough Council has confirmed that Charnwood’s share of Council Tax bills for an average Band D property will go up by £2.38 a year – which equates to a 4.5p increase per week.
That means Charnwood’s slice of the money collected represents one of the lowest increases compared with other District Councils in the county.
Councillors approved the rise during Monday’s Full Council meeting in Loughborough which discussed the Authority’s budgets for the forthcoming financial year, 2008-09.
The low level of Council Tax rise reflects the high proportion of ‘Gershon’ efficiency savings within the savings total of £1,586,000. Some £1,061,600, or 5.7% of the budget, has been saved through better working practices - without affecting service delivery. Sir Peter Gershon created a report for central government in 2004 on how the public sector could exploit efficiency saving and so release resources for front line public service delivery.
Partners and residents in the Borough were also asked for their opinions on how the Council conducts its business during the next financial year.
Comments received were fully considered before the budgets were confirmed.
Cllr John Bush (Conservative, Wreake Villages), the Deputy Leader of Charnwood and Finance Lead Member, said: “I am very pleased with this budget
“We have managed to control costs, improve services and contain the Council Tax increase to 2.5%, which is in line with inflation. Value for money for the benefit of Charnwood Council Taxpayers is our motto.”
Cllr Richard Shepherd (Conservative, Quorn & Mountsorrel Castle), the Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, added: “The budget shows the determination of the Council to achieve good services at a fair cost for the residents of Charnwood.
“I should like to thank all those who have contributed to producing it.”
Council Tax bills raise funding for Leicestershire County Council, Charnwood Borough Council, Parish Councils plus the Police and Fire Authorities.
The total Council Tax bill for an average Band D property in Loughborough will be £1,382.05 in 2008-09 – just £97.25 of this goes to Charnwood Borough Council.
