The Community Heritage Initiative is working with local communities to encourage people to record and celebrate the biodiversity and natural heritage of Leicestershire and Rutland. This Leicestershire County Council project is also supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Rutland County Council. They carry out various activities such as wildlife surveys, conservation projects, training and provide information to individuals and groups on heritage issues.

The Community Heritage Initiative (CHI) was awarded “Highly Commended” at the Local Government Chronicle and Health Services Journal Sustainable Communities Awards 2008, in the DEFRA sponsored, “Protecting the Natural Environment & Resources” category.

The project was commended for the way volunteers are involved in work to conserve heritage at a local level – this was the only Highly Commended award in this category.

Mr Mike Jones, Chairman of Leicestershire County Council and County Councilllor for Loughborough, who attended the awards evening, said:

“This effectively means that we are in the top two local authorities in protecting natural resources. I thank both professionals and volunteers for their magnificent efforts in achieving this recognition."
