Roam: A weekend of walking in Loughborough
Posted on 02/03/2008
P. Klein
Sauntering or
shuffling, ambling or rambling. Wandering or striding, strolling or hiking,
dawdling or pacing, strutting or stalking. There are so many words to express
how people move around on two feet. Each one of them suggests a different sense
of occasion, of place, of purpose, of a moment in time or of leisure or labour.
Whether it be to exercise the mind the body or our human rights, walking in its
many forms has engaged artists, philosophers, campaigners, explorers and
travellers alike for many thousands of years. While the location may be rural,
urban, or even fictional, walking continues to satisfy our urge to navigate,
investigate, visit and explore other places, as well as coming to know more
about ourselves.
‘Roam’ brings to Loughborough six artists who invite you to come walking with them to investigate the town afresh.
On Tim Brennan’s ‘manoeuvre’ (or tactical walk) a guided group will retrace the steps of the infamous Luddites, questioning how history is re-told by tourist trails. Catch a rare glimpse of Clare Blundell Jones as she steers her bizarrely animated US tumbleweed around the town’s streets. Walking with Duncan Speakman is like inhabiting a movie where you get to be the performer; while the set may look familiar, the real-time audio, broadcast through headsets, will transport you somewhere else. In the hands of artists and technologists navigational devices and GPS systems are adding a new dimension to walking. Active Ingredients’ Heartlands is a part-game, part-exercise in which hand held mobile devices monitor the players’ heart rate, while each competes to out-walk fellow players on a hike around Loughborough.
Whether you walk for health, to discover something new or to escape from the everyday, join up with a Roam artists and experience a different side of Loughborough.
Attendance on all the walks is free but many of the wlaks have a limited capacity and it is advisable to book. Please telephone Loughborough 222960 to book your place. State the time and wlak you wish to book, providing your telephone, email and or snail-mail details for confirmation.
Unless otherwise stated all walks will begin at Charnwoood Museum in Queens Park, Granby Road, Loughborough.
For all walks please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear and if necessary take an umbrella! In the event of bad weather the walks may be cancelled and rescheduled to another day.
