Rotary Club of Loughborough Beacon
Posted on 04/03/08

Each year the local Rotary Clubs hold a speaking competition for school students with a Chair, Speaker and a Proposer of the Vote of Thanks. The team winning the local heat progressing to a District (Northampton to Nottingham) semi final and then final with the best two teams then going even further towards a National Final.
This year the Rotary Club of Loughborough Beacon obtained permission to allow two teams to go forward and out of the local heat GARENDON HIGH SCHOOL and WOODBROOK VALE HIGH SCHOOL went through as winners and runners up respectively.
It was a great achievement when the teams again came first and second in the semi final and progressed to the final which was held in Wellingborough on Thursday 28th February.
The great news is that the WOODBROOK VALE HIGH SCHOOL got through to the Regional final on March 16th as Runners Up in the District Final.
The even better news is that the winners of the District title for the 4th year running are GARENDON HIGH SCHOOL and they too will be at the Regional final in Lincoln.
The standard was very high indeed and any one of the six finalists could have won but for our two teams to be 1st and 2nd was truly an outstanding result especially when you realise that about 70 schools started in the competition.
This success is a real tribute to the teachers of the two schools Alison Vann and Kate Hammond of Woodbrook Vale and Joy Putt of Garendon and to the parents and of course to the great kids who have performed so well. Dane Powell, Rosie Thomas and William Kirk of Woodbrook Vale and Liz Callan, Chris Mitchell and Bethany Taylor of Garendon.
In addition Dane Powell of Woodbrook Vale was adjudged the best Chairman and Chris Mitchell was awarded the title of best Speaker (thus retaining his title won last year)
Both teams now go forward to the Regional Final in Lincoln on 16th March and Loughborough can feel very proud of these outstanding youngsters who are all about 13 years of age and wish them all the best for the next round.
