Loughborough MP Andy Reed this week hosted a Parliamentary event with Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe to mark the contribution of grassroots heroes make through sport to their local communities.
The BBC Sports Unsung Hero Award supported by Robinsons, recognises and rewards the enormous contribution that everyday people make to the world of sport by giving time and energy for the benefit of others within their local sports communities.
15 regional winners were given a £2,500 bursary to assist them with their work including Reed’s own constituent Nina Walker, from Shepshed, who has been working with Shepshed Disabled Swimming Club and was recently honoured with a 25 year service award.
Also present were sporting ambassadors Tim Henman, Sharon Davies and Karen Pickering
Reed said:
“I am delighted to be able to host this event in Parliament recognizing the contribution of some of the unsung heroes in sport in the UK. These are the people who really need our thanks for the tireless effort they put in to local communities week in week out.
“I am also delighted that Nina Walker has been announced as the winner of the East Midlands unsung hero award. I know that Nina has worked really hard in Shepshed with the local disabled swimming club and I am so pleased that this work has now received the national recognition it truly deserves.”
