Andy Reed, Loughboroughs MP, yesterday (4th March 2008) praised the Home Secretary and local Chief Constable Matt Baggot for their announcement of the new policy in neighbourhood policing. The emphasis for the Government in recent months has been on neighbourhood policing. By April the Government will have in place dedicated neighbourhood police teams for every community. This is a clear demonstration of Labour’s commitment to working with the police to provide visible, reassuring and responsive local policing. With over 600 teams up and running, and more than 13000 sergeants and constables involved in partnership with Community Support Officers their aim is to be a more visible presence on the streets. Matt Baggot, our local Chief Constable who leads on Neighbourhood Policing for the Association of Chief Police Officers commenting on the details of the scheme as a great idea and a way forward in community policing.

The announcement gave more details of the scheme which will by the end of March have a specific Officer a person can contact who represents their community and area. The Name in Every Neighbourhood campaign is to be run by the police over the coming weeks to highlight how people can contact their own local team and a new national website will go live in March, enabling the public to get the names and numbers of their local neighbourhood policing team.

Andy said of the announcement “this is good news, showing Labours commitment to fighting crime and putting more bobbies on the beat. We are addressing the concerns of local residents and I am happy to have worked alongside Matt Baggot in the Loughborough area.

This is a great step forward in community policing for Loughborough and I support this initiative and believe it can make a real impact on the streets of Loughborough.”
