All Change for Loughboroughs Gold Card Holders
Posted on 05/03/2008
R. Reed

IT’S all change for Charnwood Borough Council’s Gold Card holders – as they will soon be receiving a new ticket to ride!
From April 1, 2008, anyone 60 or over and eligible disabled people will be able to enjoy free off-peak travel anywhere in England on local buses.
And to make people aware of the changes, Charnwood Borough Council is launching its own poster and leaflet campaign to run alongside the national advertising from the Department of Transport.
All of Charnwood’s 25,000 Gold Card Holders, many from Loughborough, have been sent letters asking them to return a new passport-sized photo so the National Travel Card passes can be sent to them in March before the new concession goes live on April 1.
So far, more than 23,000 photos have been returned and any current Gold Card holders who have not yet sent in a new picture, together with details of their name and address, are being encouraged to do so as soon as possible.
The new National Travel Pass, which carries the Gold Card branding on the back, will also allow Charnwood residents to enjoy half-price bus fares before 9.30am, half-price rail travel in the local scheme area plus free travel on buses between 11pm and midnight Monday to Friday.
Eligible disabled card users receive free bus and rail travel in the local scheme area at all times.
Cllr Hilary Fryer (Conservative Councillor for Barrow & Sileby West), Charnwood’s Cabinet lead member, said: “The Gold Card scheme has been extremely successful but this new concession will give eligible holders even more freedom and independence.
“Pass holders will be able to travel far and wide on buses free of charge between 9.30am and 11pm Monday to Friday and all day weekends and bank holidays.
“We want to ensure all existing Gold Card holders will have the National Travel Pass by the time the new scheme goes live on April 1 and would encourage anyone who has not yet sent in a passport-sized photograph to do so as soon as possible.”
Everyone will need the new National Travel Pass regardless of whether they plan to travel across England.
The existing Charnwood Gold Card will only be accepted by local travel operators in and around Loughborough until September 30th 2008 and, from then on, users will have to show the new Pass.
Anyone who doesn’t currently hold a Gold Card but will be eligible for the National Travel Card has to apply for a pass.
