Charnwood Claims Another Prosecution
Posted on 06/03/2008
P. Klein

A FIRST-TIME fly-tipper has been given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay more than £300 in costs after admitting dumping rubbish in Charnwood.
Mark Frederick Buckett, of Sandiacre Drive, Thurmaston, pleaded guilty to one count of contravening section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 when he appeared at Leicester City Magistrates Court.
The 39-year-old had dumped a double mattress, wood, carpet plus green and black bin bags full of household waste in Syston Road, South Croxton, on June 25th, 2007.
He was tracked down by Charnwood Borough Council’s Environmental Crime Enforcement Officers who discovered evidence found at the scene and collated witness reports.
The conditional discharge means Buckett must now stay out of trouble for a year or he can be re-sentenced for this offence. He was also told to pay £328.33 in costs.
Chris Cary, Charnwood Borough Council’s Senior Environmental Crime Enforcement Officer, said: “Clearing up fly-tips can cost thousands so we actively investigate all environmental crimes and offenders will be punished and prosecuted by the courts.
“It is our aim to rid Charnwood of fly-tips. This is our ninth successful prosecution and the threat of legal action and a possible criminal record should act as a deterrent to anyone thinking of dumping waste in the Borough.”
Cllr Mike Preston, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for the Environment, added: “Our Street Management team are doing an excellent job in ensuring the minority of people who dump their rubbish in the Borough will pay the price.
“There is never an excuse for dumping rubbish. But this case is particularly lamentable as the Council now offers a free bulky waste collection service.”
“Residents can have three items such as old furniture, kitchen appliances, carpets or even computers collected free of charge by the Council each year.
“This service is helping to contribute to a cleaner, greener Borough and will, hopefully, prevent similar instances such as this one taking place.”
