On Tuesday 11th March 2008 at the National Space Centre in Leicester teenagers from eight schools in the East Midlands will put their consumer knowledge to the test when they take part in the regional finals of the Young Consumer of the Year Competition and the Consumer Challenge Quiz.
In the morning, the final to find the East Midlands Consumer Challenge Quiz winners, a competition for children with moderate learning difficulties, will see five teams from two schools in Lincolnshire; Gosberton House School and Horncastle St Lawrence School; and three schools in Leicestershire; Hind Leys Community College, Shepshed; Rawlins Community College, Quorn, Loughborough and Maplewell Hall School, Woodhouse Eaves; compete against each other.
The afternoon will see four teams fighting to win the East Midlands Young Consumer of the Year title. Teams from Heanor Gate Science College and Heritage School, both from Derbyshire, will go head to head with two teams from Kings School, Grantham. Each team has already beaten off tough competition in their local county finals to reach this stage.
The winners will go forward to represent the East Midlands in the national Young Consumer of the Year final at the Bournemouth International Conference Centre in June, which brings with it the prize of the coveted trophy and £1,000 for the winning school.
Robert Taylour, Chair of Trading Standards East Midlands said: “It promises to be an exciting event, with two finals being held in competitions that help to empower the consumers of the future. These competitions are a fun and engaging way to help young people know their rights and responsibilities as consumers.”
“This year, we are pleased to be holding the first East Midlands final for the Consumer Challenge Quiz and hope that it will become an annual event, like Young Consumer of the Year, with more schools interested in taking part. We wish all the teams the very best of luck in their challenge to become the region’s top young consumers.”
Both competitions, organised by Trading Standards, aim to raise awareness of consumer rights and responsibilities in the next generation of consumers by quizzing them on a range of consumer issues.
During the day, all the teams will be able to explore the National Space Centre for free.
Last year Derbyshire school Heanor Gate Science College reached the national Young Consumer of the Year final in Manchester.
