Loughborough Students help seal Britains Olympic hockey spot
Posted on 10/03/08
P. Klein

A select group of Loughboroughs students has helped the Great Britain mens hockey squad secure a spot at this summers Beijing Olympics.
Current students Jon Bleby, Alistair McGregor and Barry Middleton and former players Glenn Kirkham and Alastair Wilson were all in action in last nights final as Great Britain denied India a place in the Olympic Games for the first time since 1928. Britain beat India 2-0 in the all-important final to take the only Olympic spot available.
Loughborough goalkeeper McGregor played a full part in all six tournament fixtures and was solid in defence allowing only three goals past him during the week-long competition.
Bleby and Middleton also started all games during the qualification campaign, Middleton contributing five goals to Britains epic 32 goal total, including the opening goal in last nights final. Loughborough graduate Kirkham, who now plays at East Grinstead, scored twice in Britains 8-0 defeat over Russia last Sunday (2 March).
Great Britain manager Pete Nicholson was delighted with the result.
We got our just rewards today and the result was the consequence of six months of very hard work and a professional approach to this tournament, he said. This was always going to be a tough match but the boys worked hard and got exactly what they deserved. Were delighted.
