Carbon Offsetting in Leicestershire
Posted on 13/03/2008
J. Milton

Thousands of new trees being planted across Leicestershire will help to offset county carbon emissions now and for future generations.
Leicestershire County Council is adding 80,000 trees across the county over the next 40 years, in a major boost to the environment.
In addition to these, 600 trees are being planted in Enderby and Narborough this month.
These trees could absorb as much as 88,660 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, based on a tree having an average 88-year lifespan, and absorbing 12.5kg of carbon a year. Unfortunately when the trees die at the end of their life and rot down this carbon is released back into the atmosphere.
One of the areas to benefit from the 600 extra trees is Enderby’s Mill Lane recreation ground, which will have 35 trees planted at the site.
Council Leader David Parsons will be planting a tulip tree as part of this Enderby Woodland scheme. The £25,000 project will see the 600 trees planted at four community sites over the next month, including oak, ash, tulip tree, birch, cherry and field maple.
David Parsons said: “These trees will have a major environmental impact in offsetting carbon emissions. There were no trees before on the Mill Lane recreation ground and so this will be a wonderful environmental improvement; we’re using larger trees that will give the immediate impact that local people will enjoy. The trees will look great but it is also proven that they are important for improving health and well being, particularly in an urban setting such as this one.”
Trees will also be planted at Narborough Recreation Ground, Enderby Golf Club, Police HQ at Enderby and other community sites.
The Enderby Woodland initiative has been designed by the Stepping Stones project and County Council landscape officers, in partnership with Enderby and Narborough Parish Councils and Blaby District Council.
Stepping Stones is a project that aims to work with communities to improve green space of all kinds in the parishes around Leicester and to continue the environmental work that has been started in the county over the coming years.
