Know Your Beat Officer in Loughborough
Posted on 17/03/2008
J. Milton

A campaign to ensure every member of the public knows the name of their local beat officer and PCSO is being launched today (Monday March 17).
The national campaign - ‘A Name for Every Neighbourhood - Keeping the Promise runs from 17 - 29 March, 2008, and celebrates the implementation of neighbourhood policing across the country.
Leicestershire Constabulary implemented neighbourhood policing in February 2006, ahead of the Governments deadline of March 2008. Consequently, every one of the 106 neighbourhoods in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland now has at least one dedicated beat officer, supported by police community support officers (PCSOs) and members of the Special Constabulary.
Throughout the two-week period, Leicestershire Constabulary will be working with the local media and carrying out a number of activities to ensure the public know who their local beat officer is and how to contact them and also promoting the good work carried out by the neighbourhood teams and partner agencies.
As part of a pilot scheme, leaflets containing details of neighbourhood teams - who they are, how they can be contacted, together with information on how the public can shape the future of policing in their area - will be distributed to households within a number of the neighbourhoods. If successful, this initiative could be extended Force-wide.
Neighbourhood policing has changed the face of many communities. The neighbourhood teams are an available resource who work only in their allocated communities to deal with crime, policing concerns and anti-social behaviour.
Local beat surgeries and other consultation events are held on a regular basis throughout the Force area, where the public are encouraged to speak to their local officers and tell them their concerns about policing in their neighbourhood.
Assistant Chief Constable Mike Goodwin, said:
"The police service has delivered on the promise to establish a named point of contact responsible for neighbourhood policing in every neighbourhood by March 2008. Leicestershire Constabulary was one of the first Forces in the country to roll out neighbourhood policing and since that time we have made a lot of progress.
"People want access to the police, influence over what happens in their neighbourhood and answers about what is happening. Throughout the period of this campaign and beyond, we will strive to ensure that our local communities know who their local officers are and the various methods that are in place to contact them.
"Our neighbourhood officers are accessible to community members, as well as our partner organisations and stakeholders, and will continue to listen to concerns and work together with people to find solutions.
"For the third year running, Leicestershire was graded ‘excellent for neighbourhood policing under the Police Performance Assessments. This shows our commitment and highlights the really positive impact that neighbourhood policing is making in our communities - and we will continue to work to build on this success."
