Leicestershire Constabulary is cracking down on domestic burglary in the run up to Easter by targeting hot spot areas and tackling those involved in handling stolen property.

The number of burglaries across the Force area is down by 9% from April 1 2007 to the end of February 2008, compared to the same period the year before. The Forces reduction target is 6%.

Detective Chief Inspector, Steve Harrod said; "In the last 11 months, we have seen a significant reduction in the number of people who have had their homes broken into. In fact there are been 456 fewer victims of burglary across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and we want our year end figures to reflect our continuing success.

"Our success in reducing burglary has been possible through a number of positive partnership activities such as targeting persistent and prolific offenders through enforcement action; information from Crime Stoppers and intelligence sharing with other Forces.

"We are not complacent, however. We know that these crimes can have a detrimental affect on people and communities long after they actually happened and we are absolutely committed to seeing further significant reductions in burglary in Leicestershire and Rutland. We need the publics help not only by giving us information about the people responsible for these crimes but also by keeping their property secure."

The police recommend that you follow these basic security measures to keep your home safe;

  • Light timers - using a light timer will make sure your home is lit after dark if you are not in. This will make the house look occupied.
  • External security lighting - you use either dusk to dawn energy efficient lighting, that will come on automatically as dusk sets in, or brighter infrared activated lighting drawing attention to movement.
  • Lock and secure - ensure that gates giving access to the rear of the house are locked. Dont forget to lock your shed; your tools can be used to break in. Trim overgrown plants - dont give burglars a hiding place.
  • Secure windows - paying particular attention to those on the ground floor and above flat roof areas. Use locks and bolts and keep all your keys, including car keys, out of sight and out of reach.
  • Property mark - your valuables by using your postcode and your house number or name. Some articles are unsuitable for marking so take photographs of your valuable property and keep them in safe place.
  • Intruder alarms - are an effective deterrent against burglars. Before choosing a system ensure it is the one most suitable for your needs.
  • Neighbourhood Watch Association - consider joining a scheme and help combat crime in your area.

Seven of the eleven people arrested in the early morning raids have been charged or released on police bail pending further enquiries. Police visited seven addresses in Loughborough and made arrests at five of them.

On the South, officers have been running Operation Winning Post to reduce the risk of residents and businesses becoming victims of burglary. It was launched at the end of January and is being run in conjunction with the four Community Safety Partnerships in the south area. It has involved increased patrols, both high visibility and plain clothed, at identified locations across all of the Local Policing Units (LPUs) on the South. The aim of the operation is to reassure the community, deter burglars and gather intelligence. Officers are also gathering intelligence in relation to the handling and sale of stolen property in Leicester.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Harrod concluded; "As Easter approaches we will be keeping the pressure on offenders and handlers by targeting them and their activities and we would urge anyone with information to give us a call."
