Police in training for charity bike ride
Posted on 18/03/2008
P. Klein

Seven police officers from the North Area are cycling from one side of Scotland to another to raise money for a local charity.
The officers have already completed 3 other charity challenges which have included cycling from coast to coast across England and Wales and also the 3 Peaks Challenge all in aid of local charities which have included Rainbows as well as a young girl, called Olivia Parker. The officers raised money to help fund her trip to Poland for revolutionary treatment to try and get her to walk because she had cerebral palsy.
This year, the team of seven will set off from the Kyle of Lochalsh on the west coast of Scotland on Monday 5th May 2008 and plan to arrive at Stonehaven on the east on Thursday 8th May, a total journey of 185 miles. They hope to raise £1000 for Wishes 4 Kids, a local charity which is dedicated to granting wishes for children and youngsters in the county who are life limited, terminally ill, have experienced life-changing physical or emotional traumas, have suffered major abuse or are diagnosed as HIV Positive.
The team consists of PC 723 Jed Howett (based at Coalville), PC 2040 Colin Gardener (Coalville), PC 1993 Gordon Doudie (Syston), Sgt 890 Steve Smith (East Midlands Airport), Sgt 1341 Nick Leeland (Loughborough), PC 2060 Dev Martin (Loughborough) and PC 1811 Paul Chubbock. (Loughborough)
PC Doudie said; "This years charity bike ride is going to be the hardest challenge yet because parts of our journey will be very hilly! We have enjoyed raising money for local charities and working together as a team. Last year we raised over a thousand pounds to help a local boy who was hurt in an accident and we took him up to Newcastle United Football Club to meet his favourite players - a day he will never forget. This year, we hope to make the wishes of other young people come true through the charity, Wishes 4 Kids.
"We are looking for as much help and support as we can, as last year we ended up funding most of the challenge ourselves, we used our own time and left our families who were all very understanding. We are looking to see if anyone can help us with the costs of food, petrol and accommodation. If anyone can help us that would be great, so I would ask if there are any companies out there willing to help please get in touch. We are of course also looking for people to sponsor the trip itself so please get in touch if you can help us in anyway."
Anyone who would like to sponsor the team, or help out in any way, can do so by calling Leicester (0116) 222 2222 and, when prompted, key in PC Gordon Doudies collar number 1993.
