The search for a woman and her car in the River Soar was been called off last tonight (18th March 2008) and will resume in daylight tomorrow.

Police were alerted to the incident shortly before 3pm yesterday afternoon (Tuesday March 18) by a member of the public reporting that a car had been driven into the River Soar in Kegworth.

The emergency services worked for hours at the scene of the incident near to Mill Lane but to no avail.

The vehicle, a silver Ford Fiesta, is totally submerged in the fast-flowing waters and is believed to have drifted some distance from the point of impact.

The conditions at the scene were extremely hazardous with the temperature, speed of the current and visibility all hampering the emergency services operation.

Police officers remained at the scene overnight. Specially trained divers from a neighbouring force who were called in to assist in the recovery of the vehicle will return in daylight today.

Police believe that the car was driven by a woman. She is thought to be the only occupant of the vehicle. Officers are in contact with the womans family who are being kept up-to-date on the progress of the recovery operation.

Officers investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident are keen to hear from anyone who saw a silver Ford Fiesta, registration number Y881 SRX, in the Kegworth area at any time before 3pm yesterday.
