Andy Reed MP today (19th March 2008) gave support for the local Sure Start centres in Loughborough and slammed Conservative plans to cut the funding for such vital schemes.

The Conservatives have announced measures to cut funding to Sure Start centres on a national basis and fears have been raised that the 3 centres in Loughborough would be in danger of closing if these plans go ahead. This would leave some of the most deprived areas of the town without adequate provisions for tackling child poverty.

There are now over 2 million children families now benefiting from the range of services on offer across the UK and Labour have announced plans to extend the schemes due to their success. The core offer includes early learning and childcare, parenting advice, health services and help finding work or training.

The Loughborough MP said: “I fully support the Sure Start centres and the 3 in Loughborough have been shown to provide excellent assistance to families. I believe they provide much needed help to families and eradicating child poverty.

“The Tories this week have given away their plans, they are planning to cut funding to these centres and leave deprived areas without outreach workers and provisions to help fight child poverty. Sure Start has been a great success in Loughborough and I hope that people continue to see that.

“Only the Tories would be stupid enough to cut something that has been proven to be such a success locally and nationally. I am sure local families will be outraged at this news.”
