Following extensive police searches a car and the body of a woman have been found in the River Soar yesterday afternoon (Wednesday 19th March 2008).

Police were called shortly before 3pm on Tuesday by a member of the public reporting that a car had been driven into the River Soar, near Mill Lane in Kegworth.

The emergency services worked for hours at the scene of the incident near to Mill Lane yesterday afternoon and evening trying to locate the vehicle and its driver but to no avail.

The searches resumed in daylight yesterday morning and at around 3.05pm in the afternoon specialist divers recovered a silver Ford Fiesta and the body of a woman from the river. The womans body was inside the car,

Inspector Ian Bayliss said: "This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the womans family at this time.

"The conditions yesterday were treacherous and the temperature, speed of the current and visibility all hampered the search operation. The searches took several hours today as the conditions were still very difficult. The river is incredibly fast flowing and swollen from the recent rain. Finally just after 3pm today search teams found the car and the womans body.

"We are not treating the incident as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the Coroner."

Anyone who saw a silver Ford Fiesta, registration number Y881 SRX, in the Kegworth area at any time before 3pm on Tuesday March 18 is asked to contact Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222 quoting reference number 403 of Tuesday March 18.

Formal identification of the deceased will come from the Coroner.
