Leicester Hospitals closed to expectant mums 28 times last year
Posted on 21/03/2008
P. Klein

New information uncovered by the Conservatives under the Freedom of Information Act reveals that 42 per cent of NHS Trusts providing maternity services had to turn away women in labour last year because they were full. The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust closed its maternity services on 28 occasions, for between 1 and 10 hours, last year.
Commenting on these figures prospective Conservative MP for Loughborough, Nicky Morgan said, "I know from recent personal experience that mums in labour do not want to find that the hospital they have chosen is shut, just when they need it most. The Government wants larger and larger maternity units. But these figures show that larger units, such as the Leicester Hospitals, are much more likely to become overcrowded and then have to shut their doors for a while. In response to a survey I did last year many people told me they wanted more maternity services in Loughborough. I will be exploring whether we could get more maternity services based locally, so hopefully they will not become so overcrowded."
