Loughborough MP welcomes Byron Report
Posted on 28/03/2008
P. Klein

Andy Reed, the MP for Loughborough, today gave his support to the Byron report released today that has been looking at internet and video game use by children. The report by Dr Byron has proposed wide reaching new measures to try and protect children from inappropriate material on the internet and in video games. The report is concerned about the available of such material on the internet and in video games.
The report proposes new measures to help parents protect and keep their children safe and these include setting up a Council on Child Internet Safety, installing filtering software on all new computers, better filter controls which are easier to use on search engines are all included in the recommendations of the report.
Children’s Secretary Ed Balls and Culture Secretary Andy Burnham have today welcomed the publication of ‘Safer Children in a Digital World’ and accepted all the recommendations of the report and propose to take the measures forward.
Andy Reed is fully supportive of the government’s position and encourages them to implement the proposals but he also calls on parents to take up their responsibility to their children as well.
The Loughborough MP said “I welcome the Bryon report today and encourage the government to speedily introduce the proposals as they are a way of helping parents. Parents have a responsibility for their children and these recommendations are a way for the government to help.
The proposals today are a way of helping parents more but parents still need to be involved in and monitoring what their children are doing and watching. The state cannot do everything but the proposals today are a step forward in helping protect our children.”
