Deputy Lieutenants
Posted on 28/03/2008
P. Klein

Five new Deputy Lieutenants were last night commissioned under oath in honour of their service to the local community. The Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Jennifer, Lady Gretton JP, commissioned the appointments at a special ceremony at County Hall.
The new Deputy Lieutenants are:
Andrew Granger of Medbourne, Market Harborough, a chartered surveyor, Chairman of the Leicester Cathedral Council, a Trustee of CARE villages, and President of the Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce.
Brigadier William Hurrell CBE of Harston nr Grantham, a former commander of the 49 (East) Brigade and Honorary Colonel of The Queen’s Royal Lancers, and current Chief Executive of the East Midlands Reserve Forces and Cadets Association.
Suleman Nagdi MBE of Leicester, a consultant, Public Relations Officer with the Federation of Muslim Organisations, and Chairman of the Muslim Burial Council.
Michael Pearson of Loughborough, formerly Bursar of Loughborough University, currently Chairman of Loughborough Endowed Schools and East Midlands Housing Association, and member of the Lord Chancellors Advisory Committee on the appointment of magistrates.
Wendi Stevens of Leicester, a freelance training consultant and Co-ordinator of the Hope Foundation for Cancer Research.
The office of Deputy Lieutenant is almost as old as that of the Lieutenancy, which can be traced back to the mid 16th Century. The Lieutenancy has evolved since the days of raising militia and today represents the local community of Leicester and Leicestershire.
Deputy Lieutenants undertake a wide range of duties and engagements including representing the Lord-Lieutenant and participating in Citizenship Ceremonies, attending remembrance services and the County Service, and helping to assess local organisations nominated for awards and honours.
The Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire Lady Gretton, said: "The Lieutenancy has enjoyed longstanding links with the uniformed services and with local community and voluntary organisations. These links are further enhanced following the appointments made to the five very deserving candidates last night."
