£500,000 scheme to tackle flooding
Posted on 02/04/2008
J. Milton
A £500,000 scheme to reduce flood risks in key parts of the county will be discussed by Leicestershire’s ruling Cabinet.
The County Council is proposing a series of drainage schemes, to reduce the risk of flooding caused by heavy rain or swollen rivers.
In February, the Council agreed to spend £250,000 for each of the next two years, to tackle key flooding problems.
On April 8, the Cabinet will consider detailed proposals, including:
£100,000 over two years, to recommend improvements to access across the Soar Valley while the river is in flood
£75,000 this year to tackle flooding at Butt Lane, Blackfordby
£25,000 this year to tackle flooding on the A47 at Leicester Forest East
£50,000 to tackle flooding at the A511 Flying Horse roundabout in Markfield
£50,000 work to reduce flooding on Coventry Road, Market Harborough
£75,000 next year to tackle flooding at Fosse Way/High Street, Syston
£30,000 each to tackle flooding at South Churchill Road, Cranoe, Mill Lane, Smeaton Westerby and Barton Road, Congerstone and £35,000 to tackle flooding at Burton Overy village centre.
Nick Rushton, Cabinet member for highways, said: “Although Leicestershire has escaped the widespread flooding seen in other parts of the country, we have had some problems – and without action, they’re only going to get worse.
“When we’ve had prolonged, heavy rain, it has inundated drainage systems, causing significant disruption on some of our roads and flooding some homes. That’s why we’re investing this money now.”
The Cabinet will consider the report at 2.30pm on April 8.
