Leicestershire Library Services is celebrating Adult Learners’ Week from 17 – 23 May by giving adults an opportunity to try something new.
Adult Learners’ Week is a national campaign encouraging people who might not have thought about learning to give it a go either for enjoyment or to gain new skills. Learning as an adult can be fun and is a great way of meeting new people with shared interests.
During the week you can:
- Drop in to talk to someone at the Leicestershire Adult Learning Service about local classes on Saturday 17 and Thursday 22 May, 10.00 – 12.00noon
- Learn how to bid, buy and sell on Ebay on Sunday 18 May 2.00 – 3.30
- Start a 4-week course in Emotional Wellbeing on Monday 19 May 2.00 – 3.30
- Take part in a Family Historians’ Question Time, with Pat Grundy from the Record Office on Thursday 22 May 2.00 – 3.30. Please note that questions must be submitted in advance, and answers will be given in open forum
- As well as all that, people over 50 can take advantage of Silver Surfers’ Day on Friday 23 May and take part in a basic introduction to the Internet,
either from 10.00 – 11.00 or 11.15 – 12.15.
To book your free place or for more information on Adult Learners’ Week events in Loughborough Library contact the library on 01509 212985.
For a full programme of free events in Leicestershire libraries during Adult Learners’ Week contact your local library (phone number under Libraries in the phone book) or go to www.leics.gov.uk/libraries.
Background Information
Adult Learners Week is an annual week-long national campaign delivered each May which seeks to engage and inspire people to pursue adult learning - either to catch up on skills not learnt at school, to learn for or at work, or to learn for fun.
Co-ordinated by NIACE (the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education) it is the UKs largest learning campaign. It promotes education and training for adults, provides access to information and guidance, motivates more adults to participate in learning opportunities and celebrates the learning achievements of adult learners through regional and national awards.
Libraries across Leicestershire have started to see the benefits of the £5 million transformation programme and other initiatives recently introduced as they buck the national trend and see book issues increasing. Latest improvements include:
Fifty libraries across Leicestershire open all day Saturday, with Loughborough library piloting Sunday opening
A big increase in new stock with a huge boost in best seller titles shedding the myth that the books libraries have are dusty and out of date
Popular events and activities including wriggly readers (rhyme and story time for 0-4 year olds), internet taster sessions and family learning activities
Online developments including improved renewal services, catalogue search facilities and 24-7 access to a librarian.
