Loughborough Students through to Challenge Cup Final

Posted on 21/04/2008

footballLoughborough Students have made it to the final of football’s Endsleigh Challenge Cup after a 5-2 win on aggregate against Division One leaders Knowle.

Loughborough achieved an impressive 3-1 away win on Saturday (19 April) against the back-to-back Cup finalists and now face West Midlands rivals Cadbury Athletic in the Cup decider on Monday 5 May, 3pm at Hednesford Town FC.

In only their first year of non-league football, Loughborough have gone from strength to strength and are currently top six in the Midland Combination Premier Division. And in March the club received the league’s prestigious Team of the Month award.

Loughborough have beaten five clubs on their way to the final; Knowle, Barnt Green Spartak, Feckenham, Meir KA and Greenhill, and head coach Tom Curtis believes they can add another win for their first silverware in non-league football.

“We’re more than capable of winning the final, but it will definitely be a tough match,” he said. “We’ve won one and lost one against Cadbury Athletic in the league, so it’s open going into next month’s final.

“It would be a fantastic achievement to win the Cup in out first year in the league. It’s been a good season for us. It was hard work for us to get up and running at the start of the year but the team has pulled together and we’re now aiming to finish top four in the league.“

“I’d particularly like to thank our manager John Duncan and assistant manager Idafe Perez for all their hard work this season.”
