Loughborough Canal Festival

The weekend is almost here and one of Loughborough’s favorite events is upon us. The Loughborough Canal and Boat Festival 2008.
Tomorrow (Saturday 3rd May 2008) the Mayor and Mayoress of Charnwood, Cllr. Joe Tormey and Cllr. Debbie Green will be met at 11:00am by the Canal Festival Organiser and officially open the days events.
On Sunday Mike and Marj Jones will open the days festivities. Mike is the Leader of Leicestershire County Council and it was announced on inLoughborough a couple of days ago that he was to be given the Freedom of the Borough.
The weather forecast for Saturday is that it will be generally cloudy but dry, although there may be a few spots of rain in the afternoon. Sunday is similar but the chance of rain is slightly higher.
Many boats are already moored alongside the canal towpath (Friday). One boat owner, Keith, who normally moors his boat ESS-EM-JAY at Bishops
Meadow Locks near Loughborough told inLoughborough that he was really looking forward to the event. Like many boat owners in the region this has become one of the regular events for their boating calendar. His 60ft craft, sporting the Harding crest is also impressive. Keith said: “It’s absolutely great, I’ve got everything I need, a shower, central heating, a double bedroom. It’s absolutely great on a summers evening and getting a fishing rod out and relaxing. There’s nothing quite like it.”
Keith’s dog, an alsatian called Holly (pictured) also seems fairly relaxed as events start to unfold.
Meanwhile, stall holders are starting to prepare for tomorrow by putting up their gazebos and clearing their pitches of any undergrowth.
