Olympic pole vault medallist makes outdoor preparations at Loughborough
Posted on 16/05/08
P. Klein

Pole vaults Olympic bronze medallist Anna Rogowska has spent the last 10 days at Loughborough University to prepare for a busy outdoor season in the run-up to the Beijing Games.
The 26-year-old, who claimed pole vault bronze in Athens, arrived in Loughborough last Monday with her coach and Polish training partners Katarzyna Sowa and Mateusz Didenkow for a two-week camp.
The trio have been making use of the world class facilities available at the University and have been training alongside Loughborough-based British number ones Steve Lewis and Kate Dennison.
Rogowska first visited Loughborough four years ago after the Athens Olympics and has returned just months out from her bid for further Games glory. One of the worlds greatest ever pole vaulters, her Polish national record height of 4.83m ranks her joint fourth on the IAAFs world all-time list.
And she has been so impressed with the Universitys facilities that she hopes to return for more training in July.
Loughborough is a very good facility for pole vaulters - to have two indoor pits as well as outdoor training is really unique, she said. The athletics centre is a really nice venue and weve been really surprised by the good weather. We are planning on spending another 10 days here in July.
Ive been able to spend time on technical aspects here. Im now jumping much better than I was at the start of the year and feel in good shape for the Olympics. I will be focusing on a medal in Beijing, but it will be very competitive as the level is higher and a lot of girls are jumping 4.70m and above.
A Loughborough trio will visit Poland next month for a womens competition hosted by Rogowska in coastal city Sopot. Dennison, Louise Butterworth and Sally Scott will be up against the Poles in a spectacular open pole vault event hosted on the towns pier.
Meanwhile visitors Sowa and Didenkow have extended their UK stay to open their outdoor season at the Loughborough International Athletics meet this Sunday (18 May) before returning home for a busy four months of competition.
