A senior Conservative Shadow Minister paid a visit to Loughborough last Friday (16th May 2008) to listen to local business concerns amid growing fears over the state of the British economy and lack of support for businesses.

Philip Hammond, MP for Runnymede and Weybridge, who is Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, met with members of Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce at the Ramada Hotel in Loughborough. In a wide-ranging discussion he fielded questions ranging from business taxes to rising fuel prices. Loughboroughs prospective Conservative MP, Nicky Morgan, joined the meeting.  Mr Hammond later attended an event for local people in Walton on the Wolds.

Following the event Philip said "I was grateful for the opportunity to visit Loughborough today and listen to the views of those running local businesses. This is a time of real economic uncertainty for our country and Gordon Brown has not created the right conditions to help businesses and individuals to cope with these difficult times."

Martin Traynor, Group Managing Director of Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce added, "We were delighted that Philip could attend this meeting.  He really did listen to our views and took on board concerns and frustrations with high taxes, too much red tape and too many Government-driven targets."
