Charnwoods Play Rangers Tour
Posted on 29/05/2008

WET weather failed to dampen the spirits of youngsters who helped to officially launch Charnwood Borough Council’s Play Rangers Tour.
The event was scheduled to take place at Queen’s Park but had to be switched to Loughborough Town Hall due to rain.
A number of fun, free activities were laid on for children of all ages in the Victoria Rooms including various games, open play and an arts zone.
Youngsters could also get their faces painted and find out more information about the Play Rangers Tour Programme as well as signing up to Charnwood Borough Council’s Wild Card Leisure Pass.
A total of 10 sessions are held each week in Loughborough, Thurmaston, Shelthorpe, Queniborough, Mountsorrel, Sileby, Barrow upon Soar and Rothley for 0-5 year-olds, 5-11 year-olds and children aged 12 and over.
Charnwood’s Play Ranger Peter Thorpe was delighted with how the launch went and is looking forward to touring the Borough.
He said: “We are really happy to get the tour underway and it was great to see so many youngsters and their parents enjoying themselves.
“It’s a shame we couldn’t hold it in Queen’s Park due to the weather but the fact it was in the Town Hall didn’t dampen people’s spirits everyone still had a great time.
“We’ve had a very positive reaction to the Tour Programme and I think that’s down to the fact we asked children what they wanted to see.
“Now we’re raring to go and we’re looking forward to meeting as many people as we can over the coming weeks.”
The Play Rangers Tour has been funded by the Big Lottery Children’s Play Initiative Programme and aims to deliver free open access play activities for youngsters up to the age of 16 and their families.
The Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Stephen Campbell, said at the launch: “It gives me great pleasure to open the Play Rangers Tour.
“With the diversity of events planned around the Borough, it cannot go wrong and I wish it every success.”
Cllr Jane Hunt added: “The Play Rangers Tour has been created for the whole of the Borough to enjoy.
“Hundreds of people attended four roadshows held over Easter to generate interest in the Play Rangers Tour and I’m convinced it will continue to be extremely popular.
“The Play Rangers have developed an exciting and innovative programme of events that will help make a difference to the lives of Charnwood’s children and young people.”
