People in Loughborough and elsewhere across the county are being encouraged to do "just one more thing" to be a little bit greener next week.

Its all part of this years National Recycle Week, which starts on Monday, June 2, and has the theme that doing just one more thing can make a big difference.

Waste experts will be making their way across the county in a series of roadshows to encourage residents to go that extra mile this Recycle Week.

The amount of waste recycled or composted in England has almost tripled between 2001 and 2007, from 57kg to 157kg per person per year.

Everyone can make a real difference by recycling just one more thing – even normal everyday items can have a real benefit. If everybody in Leicestershire recycled just one more 500ml plastic drinks bottle each week, the county would save 742 tonnes of CO2. That is the same as taking 235 cars off the road - (equating to 59 cars for Charnwood, 21 of which would be in Loughborough).

Nicholas Rushton, Cabinet member for waste management, said: Starting this week, if everyone in the county committed to recycling just one more thing, we would see some great results, in an area thats already recycling 47 per cent of waste.”

The team will be on hand to give advice and information on all things green, from composting and recycling, to real nappies. Look out for the display house, which will also be making an appearance at the roadshows in order to demonstrate the many items in each room of a house which can be recycled.

The County Council is also running a series of one-day sales of food digesters and compost bins. Staff from Green Cone will be joining the team at these events, to offer help and advice to promote these products, available at greatly discounted prices.

There will also be a children’s recycled art workshop at the Snibston Discovery Park event at 2pm on Saturday, June 7.

The roadshows will be at the following locations:

  • Monday, June 2: Fosse Park, 8am-5.30pm
  • Tuesday, June 3: Melton Mowbray Market, High Street, 8am-3pm
  • Wednesday, June 4: Asda, Leicester Road, Oadby, 8.30am-4pm
  • Thursday, June 5: Sainsbury’s, Greenclose Lane, Loughborough, 8.30am-4pm
  • Friday, June 6: Sainsbury’s, St Mary’s Place, Market Harborough, 8.30am-4pm
  • Saturday, June 7: Snibston Discovery Park, Ashby Road, Coalville, 10am-5pm
  • Sunday, June 8: Hinckley Carnival, Clarendon Park, Coalville 12-4pm

As well as the roadshows, the County Councils Education Officer will be visiting primary schools across the County to run a series of Waste-Free Packed Lunch workshops at lunchtimes. These will encourage children to think about the waste they produce.

Officers will be visiting Ab Kettleby Primary School on Monday, June 2, Arnseby C of E Primary School on Tuesday, June 3, Kirby Muxloe Primary School on Wednesday, June 4 and All Saints Primary School, Sapcote, on June 5.
