Loughborough Streets and Rubbish
Posted on 12/06/2008

Local Councillors have condemned the new arrangements for students , saying “It doesn’t meet their needs and it certainly doesn’t help residents.”
Students have previously had their rubbish collected when packing up in the summer, this year they are only being allowed, one black bag of extra rubbish.
“This is totally unreason able and cannot be enforced”, said Councillor Max Hunt, adding, “it’ll rebound on the residents if the Council does not pick up the waste left behind.”
Previously rubbish left behind as students left town has been collected, under the new rules, it will not and council officers say they will attempt to prosecute students.
“This is quite daft”, said Cllr Hunt. “Students who have left town are very costly to trace and in any case how will the Council know which student to trace?”
“Everyone knows that when you move house there’s a lot of rubbish to get rid of. In student houses it often falls on the last person to leave, said Cllr Debbie Green.
The councillors want the council to restore the extra collection and encourage students to use the recycling and bulky waste collection, not leave it to residents to pick up the pieces.
Cllr Hunt added, "The council arent even supplying the black bags, you can only buy them in bulk anyway. Its the neighbours who will have to endure the uncollected rubbish unless the Council gets its act together. Residents tell me that over overflowing boxes and bags fester or blow down the street making their street look seedy. They dont blame the students, moving houses is often a rush and they dont get much help."
Term is due to finish on 20th June 2008, and university students are now preparing to leave town properties.
