Loughborough MP Welcomes New Carers Strategy

Posted on 12/06/08

Andy Reed MP has warmly welcomed the new strategy to support, help and improve the lives of Britains unsung army of carers announced this week.

This week is Carers Week, it is held in June every year, and is an opportunity to thank carers for all the hard work they do and highlight their cause.

The strategy announced this week expands the information and advice services available for carers as well expanding the skills and training opportunities for carers. More training will also be provided for professionals who work with carers.

The NHS will also trial annual health checks for carers, and look at ways for GPs to support carers better. There will be more support for the growing number of young carers, both inside and outside school.

The biggest part of the new strategy is an expansion of the provision of extra short breaks for carers to provide a break for carers. With 370 million of new investment being announced for carers it provides funding to expand shorts breaks that are available for carers including short breaks for carers of adults. These breaks will be tailored to individual carers needs to help them get time away from caring in the way that will make the most difference to their lives.

The Loughborough MP said: I support the Carers Strategy as it sets out action for the carers of today and tomorrow. This year Carers Week isnt just about saying thanks. Labour has launched the new Carers Strategy to put carers at the centre of family policy, and give them the recognition and status they deserve.

The expansion of the short breaks provision will make a real difference for carers providing a valuable break for carers and recognising the work they do. I fully support the strategy and welcome the governments commitment to carers.
