Andy Reed, MP for Loughborough, has welcomed steps taken by Energywatch (the gas & electricity watchdog) to help consumers avoid unexpected energy debts. Energywatch has been campaigning for over eighteen months to help consumers who pay through a prepayment meter using paper tokens. Severe problems have been faced by some consumers who have faced unexpected debt due to price rises where the supplier fails to reset meters timeously; leading at times to debts of many thousand of pounds.

Now a leaflet has been produced by Energywatch which gives practical advice to those on token meters including:

• What to do if the supplier has not reset the meter after a price change.

• How to check that the correct amount is being charged and an outline of the steps to take if this is not the case.

• Rights for the consumer where they feel they have not been treated fairly by the electricity supplier.

The Loughborough stated “the initiative taken by Energywatch is indeed very welcome”. He added “there is some sound guidance here and help on what to do for people who are on electricity meters”.

Copies of the Energywatch leaflets are available from Reed’s Constituency Office – where constituents can request one by writing to him at 21 Fennel Street, Loughborough, LE11 1UQ or by telephoning 01509 261226.

A telephone number for people to contact directly Energywatch is 0845 906 0708 (local rate call).
