Loughborough MP Backs Government Changes For Co-operatives

Posted on 01/07/08

houses of parliament

Andy Reed, MP for Loughborough, today gave his full support to the government plans to update and change the law on co-operatives and the mutuals sectors. The government has announced plans to bring about legislative change to help co-operatives compete on an equal footing with business and help them to continue to grow.

The aim of the changes is to help enable the sector to grow in economic terms, help to increase efficiency and cut red tape as well as level the field so that co-operatives can operate on an equal footing as other companies.

Andy Reed MP a Labour/Co-op member has long been active in the co-op movement and has engaged with the government on ways to help the co-operative and mutual sector continue to grow and offer an alternative type of organization.

The announcement shows that the Government is committed to the Cooperative financial sector and the mutual movement in general. Over the past 10 years the sector has grown enormously and with these changes the Co-operative and mutual financial industry can continue to promote and expand its inclusive and social change agenda here in the UK and abroad.

The Loughborough MP told inLoughborough:

As a Co-operative member I am very happy with the governments announcement and want to see an increase in the co-operative sector. These new changes announced help bring co-operative legislation in line with modern business rules.

This is good news for the co-op movement and good news for fair, ethical and member led business.
