Pirates Set Sail For Loughborough
Posted on 08/07/2008
Charnwood Museum has been invaded by Pirates! The Pirates discovered the popular family friendly museum in the beautiful Queens Park in Loughborough and have decided to set up home for the summer holidays.
It is believed that the pirates were attracted by the museum’s summer holiday exhibition “I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside” and have decided to take up residence. The sandpit, complete with buckets and spades and deckchairs, is thought to be a particularly enticing feature for pirates looking for a place to bury their treasure.
In fact it is rumoured that the pirates have hidden their treasure all over the museum and visitors will be able to follow the clues and discover the secret pirate messages.
An additional fleet of pirate ships have been spotted on the horizon. They are due to land on Thursday 17 July when budding young pirates will be making their own personal pirate ships to captain in the Museum’s education room.
As pirate ships frequently sink young pirates are advised to make treasure chests in the “Sunken Treasure” workshops on Tuesday 5 August to hide all their jewels in. The “X Marks the Spot” workshops on Tuesday 19 August will offer an opportunity to create a pirate treasure map so that the treasure can be safely hidden.
Museum staff are hopeful that the local population will fight the pirates back by making some fearful “Monsters of the Deep” on Thursday 7 August. They have been asked to be on alert for the “All Gold” workshop on Monday 11 August in case the pirates try to steal any of the Olympic medals young visitors will be making in this workshop.
All budding pirates and willing museum defenders are asked to book their workshop places by calling the Museum on 01509 233754 or calling into the museum in Queens Park, Loughborough. Workshop places cost £2 per child and are suitable for children aged 3 and above. Children must be accompanied by an appropriate adult. Pirate Treasure Trail activities and the summer exhibitions are free.
“Pirate Ships” workshops will be held on Thursday 17 July, “Sunken Treasure” workshops on Tuesday 5 August, “Monsters of the Deep” on Thursday 7 August, “All Gold” on Monday 11 August, and “X Marks the Spot” on Tuesday 19 August. Pirate Treasure Trail activities take place every day from 12 July to 7 September. These are just some of the fantastic art and craft workshops, events and exhibitions taking place at Charnwood Museum over the summer holidays. Please contact Charnwood Museum for further details of the activity programme.
Charnwood Museum is in Queens Park in the centre of Loughborough and is open from 10.00am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday and 2pm-5pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
Charnwood Museum is run as a partnership between Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council.
