Mayors visit to Loughboroughs twin town of Zamosc
Posted on 08/07/2008
THE Mayor of Charnwood has taken the right path to strengthen friendship links with Loughborough’s twin town of Zamosc.
Cllr Stephen Campbell and the Mayoress, Cllr Brenda Seaton, were on hand to officially open a newly-named pathway ‘Bulwar Loughborough’ during a whistle-stop visit to the Polish town.
The naming was just one event being held to mark the 10th anniversary of the twinning between Loughborough and the City of Zamosc, in south-east Poland.
Cllrs Campbell and Seaton flew on a budget airline from East Midlands Airport to Krakow where they were collected for the six-hour drive to Zamosc.
While there, they also visited a primary school and the Rotunda, part of the original fortifications of the town which were used as an interrogation and execution point by the Nazi occupation troops during the Second World War.
Families and friends from Zamosc will be making a visit to Charnwood in August, when they will be hosted by members of the Loughborough Twinning Association.
The Mayor will also be inviting his counterpart from Zamosc, Marcin Zamoyski, to make a return visit to Loughborough to unveil a plaque in the Market Place to mark the 10th anniversary of the twinning.
Cllr Campbell said: “I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to be able to visit Loughborough’s Polish twin town – and it was an honour to be able to open this newly-named pathway on behalf of the people of Loughborough.
“I hope that seeing the name of Loughborough on the sign above the path will be an everyday reminder to the people of Zamosc of our ongoing friendship.
“We are looking forward to the opportunity later in this 10th anniversary year to receiving their Mayor and townsfolk and raising the profile of Zamosc in Loughborough.”
