NHS Birthday Celebrations

Charnwood Labour joined celebrations of the 60th Anniversary of the NHS which played a major theme at this week-ends East Midlands Region Labour Party Conference. The NHS was set-up after the War to ensure that health care was available to all, free at the point of delivery. It was opposed by the Conservative Party, and the medical establishment, but is now established as a great British Institution. In the last decade life expectancy has increased by 7% and infant mortality has fallen; these internationally accepted measures of a Nations health are testimony to the success of the NHS. With more doctors, nurses and modern facilities such as Systons new GP health centre, and Loughboroughs new Clinic, the NHS continues to improve. The Governments key objective that all patients will wait no more than 18 weeks from seeing a GP to receiving treatment has been achieved. Investment into the NHS has trebled since 1997. 90 new NHS walkin centres have been opened across the country, along with over 650 one-stop primary care centres, and is investing £750 million in a new generation of modern, convenient community hospitals.

New investment in health care facilities has resulted in 83 major new hospitals being built and 3000 GP practices improved or refurbished. 100 new GP surgeries have opened in the areas that need them most, along with 152 new GP-led health centres across the country, to be open seven days a week from 8am to 8pm.

Labour remains committed to a NHS that is free at the point of need with equal access for all, irrespective of wealth.

Eric Goodyer, Labours Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Charnwood said “The NHS is one of Britains greatest achievements, with dedicated staff who have delivered. I am proud of its achievements”
