POLICE are encouraging parents to book their youngsters on Charnwood Borough Council’s Summer Activity Programme to prevent them from getting into trouble during the holidays.

Senior officers believe the Authority’s packed programme of sport and leisure events which runs from Monday, July 14 to Friday, August 22 are a ‘constructive way of keeping young people entertained’.

There are more than 50 popular activities available, including football, kiwk cricket, golf, rugby, tennis, ice skating, horse riding, dancing, skiing, climbing, trampolining and swimming.

Bookings can now be made and Wild Card holders could save up to 50 per cent on all the events arranged for the six-week summer break.

Chief Inspector Alistair Roe, from the North Area Community Safety Bureau, said: “We would encourage as many young people as possible to take part in the organised activities.

“We know from experience that bored children are more likely to get into trouble with the police and summer programmes like this are a fun and constructive way of keeping young people entertained throughout the holidays.

“We want young people to enjoy themselves in a safe environment and make sure their behaviour doesn’t have a detrimental impact on anyone else while they are off school.”

Cllr Jane Hunt (Conservative councillor for Loughborough Nanpantan), Charnwood Borough Council’s Champion for Children, Young People and Play, said: “These exciting holiday activities are held at every end of term school holiday and at venues throughout the borough.

“The events are for all age groups and cover a range of interests. Theyre a great way to try something new, or an opportunity to make new friends.

“We have had some fantastic feedback from events we have held in previous holidays, young people really enjoy them. Book early to avoid disappointment.”

Matt Forsyth, Charnwood Borough Council’s Sport and Leisure Activity Co-ordinator, added: “There has been a lot of interest in the Summer Holiday Activity Programme but there is still time to book places on a number of events.

“We have tried to put on as many different activities as possible so the programme has something for everyone.

“Parents booking their youngsters on the programme will know they are taking part in something they enjoy in a safe environment without constantly thinking about where they are or what they’re doing.”
