STARK WARNING PRISON FOR PROLIFIC CAR CLOCKERs

A two year joint car clocking investigation between Leicestershire Trading Standards and Leicestershire Police, culminated today with the two defendants being sentenced to a total of eight and half years in prison

Leicestershire Trading Standards had received complaints from consumers, who had purchased vehicles from the defendants, Anthony Leadeatt of Enderby and his son Tyrone Leadeatt of Leeds (formerly of Leicester Forest East). These vehicles were subsequently found to be clocked (mileage turned back). The defendants had given various false names, used a variety of mobile phone numbers and sold from various addresses around the County.

Officers from Trading Standards joined Leicestershire Police Officers during raids at the home and business addresses of the defendants. Numerous documents were located relating to their car business. The raids also produced evidence of Tyrone Leadeatts involvement with theft and money laundering, along with a large quantity of Coccaine belonging to Anthony Leadeatt.

Both defendants pleaded guilty to seventeen offences under the Trade Descriptions Act and forgery and counterfeiting offences, which related to the vehicle crimes. Tyrone also pleaded guilty to 3 offences of theft concerning 70,000 and 2 offences of Money Laundering. Anthony was also subsequently found guilty of possession with intent to supply a class A substance.

On the 9th July 2008 at Leicester Crown Court Anthony Leadeatt was sentenced to a total of six years imprisonment and Tyrone Leadeatt was sentenced to a total of two and half years imprisonment.

David Bull Head of Trading Standards for Leicestershire County Council said These prison sentences send a stark warning to other car clockers, that this practice will not be tolerated. Car clocking causes serious financial detriment to legitimate businesses and consumers and that is why the Police and Trading Standards will continue to target car clockers.
