Five Loughborough University players have been named in two England women’s cricket squads preparing for a series of international fixtures this summer.

Students Laura Marsh and Nicky Shaw, both of whom are part of Loughborough’s women’s UCCE side, join graduate Lydia Greenway in the 15-player squad announced this week.

All three are among 12 players named from the victorious England side that retained the Ashes in Australia earlier this year. The summer series has kicked off today (11 July) with back-to-back ODIs against the West Indies on the University campus.

England will then play South Africa and India in two NatWest Women’s Series as well as in four NatWest Women’s International Twenty20s, in preparation for the ICC Women’s World Cup in Australia next year.

“It was very difficult to select the squad for this summer’s series given the talent that we have in England at the moment and the very successful winter tour we’ve just had,” said England head coach Mark Lane.

“Some fantastic performances in the Super 4s with key players scoring big runs demonstrates that we’re progressing and moving forward to our ultimate goal of the ICC Women’s World Cup in Australia in 2009.”

In England’s Academy side, cricket performance manager Alexia Walker has been named captain of the 14-player squad that includes Loughborough students Salliann Briggs and Jasmine Titmuss.

Walker, who was also promoted to captain this year for her Sussex county side, is delighted Loughborough’s players have been named in both squads and is looking forward to leading the Academy this summer.

“I was pleasantly shocked to be named in the side,” she said. “The selectors are obviously happy with my performances with the Super 4s and county fixtures. I’m looking forward to going in as captain and leading by example.

“I’m really pleased Salliann and Jasmine are named too. Sal has really upped her batting game in the last 18 months and Jas continues to improve her bowling.

“I’m also delighted Nicky and Laura have been selected again with England. They’ve both performed well over the summer off the back of a winter series. I’m really pleased for them.”

The Academy are set to play Ireland and the full England side on 2 and 3 August at Wellington College as well as a Twenty20 match against South Africa on 4 August at Reading CC.
