Green Flags for Loughborough and Charnwood
Posted on 17/07/2008
TWO of Charnwood Borough Council’s most popular open areas will be flying the flag after being nationally recognised as shining examples of outstanding green spaces.
Queen’s Park in Loughborough and The Outwoods have been accredited with the Green Flag Award, which is the national standard for parks and green spaces.
The announcement was officially made today (Thursday, July 17th) by the Civic Trust and officers from Charnwood Borough Council will be attending a special presentation ceremony in Liverpool on Thursday, July 24th when they will receive the flags.
It is the first time that Queen’s Park has been awarded the Green Flag and comes on the back of a number of improvements to the popular attraction situated in the heart of Loughborough town centre.

The toilets have been refurbished, park rangers now regularly patrol the area and new play equipment for children of all ages is currently being installed.
Cllr Peter Lewis (Conservative Councillor for Loughborough Nanpantan), Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Leisure, said: “To achieve one Green Flag is splendid – to achieve two is simply outstanding and a huge tribute should go to all involved.
“The new Green Flag, for Queen’s Park, marks the culmination of determined and imaginative efforts by officers, staff and also by the Friends of Queen’s Park.
“They have ensured this lovely space retains its essential character, while at the same time meeting the leisure requirements of excited youngsters who want to play and those more senior citizens who want to relax and watch the world go by.
“We have every right as citizens of Loughborough to feel real pride in what is ‘our park’.”
It is the second year the Outwoods has been awarded Green Flag status – which is the park and open spaces equivalent of the Blue Flag that is handed to clean beaches across the country.
To ensure it continued to meet the high standards set by the Green Flag judges, the Outwoods Management Committee has agreed to purchase a Tramper, an all-terrain mobility scoter which will give better access to the 45-acre site of Special Scientific Interest to people with disabilities.
A new picnic area has also been put in place while improvements have been made to signage and pathways.
Cllr Lewis added: “The Outwoods has more than maintained the high standard set last year. In particular, they way in which the Borough has responded to improve disabled access puts us way ahead of many other places in the country.
“Our Warden and the Outwoods Management Committee, led by Cllr David Snartt, are to be warmly thanked and congratulated.”
Chris Traill, Charnwood Borough Council’s Director of Leisure and Environment, added: “This award shows that both Queen’s Park and the Outwoods are among the best parks and open spaces in the country – and we are really proud of them both.
“A lot of hard work has been put in by Council staff, the Outwoods Management Committee and Friends of Queen’s Park to ensure we achieved this standard and their efforts are really appreciated.”
