Young cyclists have celebrated the end of their road safety course with a ride through Charnwood Forest, to the village of Woodhouse.

The eight students from Loughborough completed Leicestershire County Councils Bike4Life course over five sessions.

The Year Seven pupils from Woodbrook Vale High School were taught by the County Councils road safety tutor Sue Marriott.

Their Level 2 cyclist training included cycling at junctions, mini roundabouts and cycle paths, and how how to check brakes, tyres and gears.

Nicholas Rushton, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation said: Cycle training is an important part of the work of our Road Safety and Travel Awareness team.

It equips children with skills to negotiate the roads, and to check their bikes are safe to ride. Well done to the students at Woodbrook Vale for completing their course.

The school identified the need for the cycle training in their School Travel Plan*, as several students had not had the training at primary school.

Barbara Blanchard, the schools travel plan co-ordinator said: The students have got a lot out of this course. Not only have they enjoyed it, but it has made them more confident cycling on the roads.

The ride to Woodhouse is a reward for their efforts and a great way for them to practise all the skills they have learned.

The group completed their ride to Woodhouse with a stop at Beaumanor Hall for refreshments. They were accompanied by Sue Marriott, and school governor John Catt, who suggested the ride.
