Veterans to be honoured at Loughborough Town Hall
Posted on 12/08/08

PEOPLE from Charnwood who have served their country are to be honoured during a special presentation at Loughborough Town Hall.
Back in June The Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Stephen Campbell encouraged residents to nominate ex-Armed Forces personnel for a Veterans Badge as the Borough prepared to mark National Veterans Day for the first time. The UK Armed Forces Veterans Lapel Badge was launched in May 2004 by the Minister of Veterans, to promote recognition of veterans by the wider British public the unique and unifying symbol of the HM Armed Forces Veterans Badge was introduced. The first veterans badge was issued to Lord Healy, a veteran of the Battle for Monte Cassino, on 10 May 2004, which initiated the roll out of the badge to the Second World War veteran generation. Since then eligibility to apply for the badge has been extended in sequential phases to all veterans. This has now closed the gap between those who apply for their badge and those who receive it automatically on leaving the Services.
On Saturday 16th August 2008 the Mayor will present 39 ex-Armed Forces personnel with Veterans Badges on Saturday, August 16. The Veterans are from a mix of the Army, Navy and Air Force and some have served in more than one unit. The badge the Veterans will receive is an enamelled, engraved, and pinned, lapel badge with the words HM Armed Forces Veteran, and encompasses the Tri-Service, Anchor, Crossed Swords and Eagle motif. Its symbolism is designed to unite all veterans in recognising the commonality of their service, to promote a sense of unity and community between surviving veterans and to encourage public recognition of current veterans and their valuable continuing contribution to society.
It is the first of two presentations taking place to honour veterans living in the Borough and among the recipients will be Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Mr Terry Higgins OBE JP DL.
The Veterans, who will be entertained by the Salvation Army band before and after the ceremony, will also enjoy afternoon tea,
Youngsters from Loughboroughs Sea, Army and Air Training Corp cadets will be attending to direct invited guests to the Town Halls Victoria Rooms.
Cllr Campbell said It will be an honour to present these veterans with their badges.
Anybody who has ever served in our Armed Forces is a veteran. Theyleave the armed forces and bring some amazing skills into our community in theircivilian jobs.
We should all recognise that these are people who have shown a tremendouscommitment to serve both nationally and locally.
"I have been overwhelmed by the number of applications for badges in Charnwood. So many veterans have asked to be presented with their badge that we have had to arrange two separate ceremonies at the Town Hall.
I will also be making several visits to present badgesat home to veterans who are unable to travel to the Town Hall.
More than half a million Veterans Badges have been handed out to ex-servicemen and women across the country and anyone who has served in the Armed Forces, irrespective of time or conditions, may apply.
It is not too late to nominate someone for a Veterans Badge as a second presentation will be taking place on Saturday, September 20.
Simply send in their name, age, address, national service number and details of their Armed Forces service history to Veterans Badge, The Office of Mayor, Charnwood Borough Council, Southfield Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 2TX.
Further details are also available by calling Loughborough (01509) 634 602, emailing mayor@charnwood.gov.uk or logging on to http://www.charnwood.gov.uk/democracy/veterans.html
