Loughborough Flowers: Now Its the Town Centre Only
Posted on 02/09/2008
“Cabinet blind to what is going on, and deaf to the voice of Loughborough people” Cllr Hunt
As the Charnwood Borough Council Cabinet are asked to agree contracts for next year’s bedding plants on Thursday, Max Hunt, Leader of the Charnwood Labour Group has called for a radical improvement in the displays.
“The quantity being ordered has been dramatically reduced in comparison to what it was a few years ago, yet the Loughborough Special Council Tax goes up and up.”, he says. As the town grows, the floral displays shrink to decorate the town centre only”.
This is partly due to the County’s take-over of roundabouts which are now dull compared to former times, but he believes there are many other former flower beds untended beyond the town centre, such as those at Garendon Green.
“Before they make this decision, I would like to see the Cabinet members eyes opened to the long term detriment they are inflicting on Loughborough. People new to the town will never know the way the town shone in the past and others will forget sooner than we imagine.”
If this continues, he says, people arriving in Loughborough for the first time, visiting any of Loughborough’s key industries and educational centres will just find ‘another drab midlands town’.
Also: The County Council took over the roundabouts in February 2006 but are only now seeking planning permission for the signs. Objections to the signs have been raised by Cllr Hunt and the Campaign the Protection of Rural England.
