After being contacted by angry England fans unable to watch the game against Croatia Loughborough MP Andy Reed has warned sports bosses that they risk alienating genuine fans if they keep chasing big money.

Live coverage on Setantas pay-TV channel was seen by 1.55m people, well below figures for previous games.

Games featuring Scotland and Wales were also only available live on pay-TV. Many fans were angry they were unable to watch highlights of the games on an analogue channel.

When England lost to Croatia last November, more than 11 million people watched live coverage on the BBC.

"I have been part of a small group of backbench MPs who have argued for greater protection of sports coverage. We successfully argued for the protection of top grade games on the Listed Events list.”

“After the sale of cricket to Sky I received lots of complaints from constituents. They are right to be angry with the governing bodies of their sport. It does appear in football that greed has outweighed the needs of fans. I would urge the FA to think again. The RFU did when they realised their mistake of selling themselves to Sky a few years ago and have now returned to the BBC with much bigger audiences"
