fuel costs

In the wake of rising fuel costs Andy Reed MP welcomed a range of measures to help reduce energy bills and save energy but said that Ministers needed to keep looking for more ways to cut customers bills immediately as well.

The Loughborough MP told in Loughborough:

"Whilst the overall package of what Gordon Brown announced today is very welcome - especially when combined with extra measures already announced - there is still more help needed for those facing real hardship this winter."

"We need to look at the way these utilities are regulated and how prices have been allowed to rise so sharply. Whilst most this is due to higher global energy prices we need to look at the same profits made by the same companies"

"On the other hand this is also a wake up call about the need for an energy policy that does not make us so dependent on fossil fuels. We are all learning the cost of being dependent on global energy and none of us can be hidden from the consequences of globalisation."

"This is why the £1bn being invested by government in alternative energy technology is also the right way to go. It may not be a quick fix or vote winning in the short run - but these sort of investments in our long term future which governments must make now. It is the right thing to do."
