DVDs

A new DVD teaching young people in Loughborough and the rest of Leicestershire about their consumer rights when things go wrong is being launched.

Companies selling technical products such as mobile phones and computer games frequently target young people, but when the purchase is faulty, many do not know their rights.

Leicestershire County Councils Trading Standards has launched a DVD for young people that will be going out to all secondary schools, youth clubs and similar groups in Loughborough and the rest of Charnwood and Leicestershire.

The short film is called Dont Lose Out and is aimed at 14 to 18-year-olds. It features young people talking about buying things that affect them now, or will do soon, such as mobile phones, clothes, BMX bikes, cars, event tickets and computer games, both from the high street and on the internet.

The aim of the DVD is to inform young consumers, in an eyecatching and lively way, that they have rights, so they can get problems sorted and dont lose out.

Ernie White, Leicestershire County Councils Cabinet member for Community Services, said: "We hope teachers and youth leaders will use this short film to aid discussion about consumer rights. Young people are making more significant purchases at a younger age, so need to know how to sort problems out with businesses.
